Power-to-X at Commercial Scale: From Sustainable Aviation Fuel to Everyday Products

Power-to-Liquid sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is no longer a technology waiting beyond 2030. In Moses Lake, Washington, AirPlant One is online and producing on-spec E-Jet SAF today. That milestone changes the conversation. The central question is no longer whether Power-to-X technologies can produce jet fuel. It is how quickly the industry can scale production, integrate with existing aviation infrastructure and replicate facilities across new geographies.
Ahead of the 2026 North American SAF Conference & Expo, SAF Magazine host Anna Simet spoke with Twelve Vice President of Business Development Ashwin Jadhav about what commercial Power-to-Liquid production teaches us—and what comes next for SAF. Watch the conversation below.
Power-to-Liquid SAF Is Here
Sustainable aviation fuel can be produced through several pathways, each defined by its feedstocks, production process and energy source. At Twelve, we produce E-Jet SAF through a Power-to-Liquid pathway using three inputs: carbon dioxide, water and renewable electricity.
Our proprietary electrochemical technology performs CO2 electrolysis, transforming captured carbon dioxide into the building blocks required to produce hydrocarbons. Those molecules are then converted and upgraded into E-Jet fuel that meets ASTM D7566 Annex A1 specifications.
E-Jet can be blended at up to 50% with conventional Jet A. The resulting fuel works with today’s aircraft engines, fuel tanks, storage systems and airport infrastructure—no fleet modifications required. When made primarily with biogenic CO2 and renewable electricity,
E-Jet can reduce lifecycle emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional jet fuel.
That compatibility is essential for aviation. Long-haul flight requires energy-dense liquid fuel, and replacing the global aircraft fleet or rebuilding airport infrastructure would add cost and time to an already complex transition. Power-to-Liquid SAF offers a lower-carbon fuel pathway designed for the aviation system operating today.

AirPlant™ One Brings Power-to-Liquid SAF to Commercial Scale
AirPlant One began commercial operations in June 2026. It is the first commercial-scale facility in the United States to produce E-Jet fuel and a major milestone for the broader eFuels sector.
The facility is producing on-spec E-Jet SAF and E-Naphtha, a foundational eChemical used to make thousands of everyday products. Fuel from AirPlant One is also expected to power an Alaska Airlines flight, helping move Power-to-Liquid SAF from first production toward regular commercial aviation use.
Reaching this point required more than scaling equipment. First-of-a-kind industrial projects depend on a connected commercial ecosystem: suppliers, engineering and construction partners, financiers, customers, regulators and fuel distributors.

As Ashwin explains in the podcast, those relationships can create a circular challenge. Project developers want financing. Financiers want customer offtake agreements. Airlines want confidence that a real facility will produce fuel at the required specification. Twelve helped break that loop by securing commercial agreements early, creating the demand signal needed to support financing, construction and operations.
AirPlant One represents the result: not simply a technology demonstration, but an operating American manufacturing facility producing certified hydrocarbon products from CO2, water and renewable power.
Scaling SAF Through Existing Aviation Infrastructure
Producing sustainable aviation fuel is only part of commercialization. SAF must also be blended, certified, stored, transported and delivered safely to an aircraft.
The aviation industry has already invested extensively in pipelines, terminals, tanks, airport storage and fuel-delivery systems. Commercial SAF should make the greatest possible use of that infrastructure rather than require an entirely new distribution network.
Our standard for the end customer is straightforward: nothing should change. If an airline receives conventional fuel by pipeline or truck today, it should be able to receive SAF in the same way.
Twelve is working with World Fuel to integrate E-Jet into established aviation-fuel logistics. The collaboration brings together Power-to-Liquid production with existing capabilities for blending, storage, quality assurance and airport delivery.
This model helps make infrastructure a scaling advantage. Using proven systems can reduce the capital required outside the production facility, accelerate commercial readiness and give airlines access to a new fuel through familiar operating procedures.
Replication Is the Next Phase of SAF Manufacturing
AirPlant One is a beginning, not an endpoint. Decarbonizing aviation requires far more SAF than any single facility can produce. The next phase is replication: applying the design, operating experience and commercial partnerships developed at AirPlant One to larger facilities in additional locations.
Repeatability can improve both project economics and speed. First-of-a-kind facilities must solve new engineering, construction, commissioning and financing challenges. Subsequent AirPlants can benefit from standardized designs, established suppliers and teams that have already worked through those early decisions.
Each new site will have local requirements, but the core inputs remain consistent: carbon dioxide, water and renewable electricity. Locations with abundant clean power and suitable CO2 can support a repeatable production model that transfers lessons from one facility to the next—reducing capital costs, improving project returns and expanding domestic fuel supply.
That approach also strengthens American manufacturing and energy security. Power-to-Liquid production can be located where the required inputs and infrastructure are available, diversifying fuel supply and reducing dependence on fossil extraction and geographically concentrated resources.
Beyond SAF: A Power-to-X Platform for American Manufacturing
Sustainable aviation fuel is one of the most visible products made at AirPlant One, but AirPlant is fundamentally a Power-to-X manufacturing platform. It uses electricity to transform carbon dioxide and water into hydrocarbons—the essential molecules behind fuels, chemicals and materials.
AirPlant One currently produces two Twelve flagship products:
E-Jet SAF, a Power-to-Liquid eFuel for commercial aviation.
E-Naphtha, an eChemical and drop-in alternative to conventional naphtha.
Naphtha is more than another fuel. It is a foundational building block for plastics, packaging, solvents, synthetic fibers and thousands of other products. Through these value chains, it reaches household goods, apparel, electronics, automotive components and many of the materials people use every day.

This is the broader promise of eManufacturing: producing eFuels, eChemicals and eMaterials through an electrified industrial system instead of relying on fossil feedstocks.
The global economy does not only burn hydrocarbons; it is built from them. Fuels move people and goods, while hydrocarbon-based chemicals and materials form the physical products that surround us. Advancing the future of manufacturing therefore requires changing both how we generate energy and how we make the foundational molecules of modern life.
AirPlant offers a new model based on abundant, durable and onshore inputs. Carbon dioxide, water and renewable electricity can support distributed production wherever the right resources and infrastructure exist. Over time, that can create more resilient domestic supply chains while manufacturing the same essential molecules industry already knows how to use.
The same platform producing sustainable aviation fuel for an aircraft can also produce an upstream building block for packaging, textiles or household goods. SAF is an important destination—and a powerful proof point for a much larger industrial transformation.
